On this #InternationalWomen’s Day my heart is heavy with the weight of the world – from the conflict in Ukraine to the increasingly urgent climate crisis. I am thinking both about the dire consequences of these crises on the lives of women and girls, and also of the critical need for women’s equal participation in navigating the solutions.

Women are essential in peace and negotiating processes because they typically take a more collaborative and empathetic approach that helps bridge divides and elevate the needs and perspectives of many groups. This #IWD I want to focus my sights beyond the victimization of women and towards the criticality of women’s full and equal participation in the rooms that we cannot afford to exclude them from. Let us recall the words of Graça Machel:

“War may have been started by men, but peace will not be achieved without women.”
